Dr. Maame Efua Addadzi-Koom, Vice Dean of the Faculty of Law at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) and an expert in international human rights law, has published a new book, Adjudicating African Women's Rights: The Jurisprudence of the ECOWAS Court.
Published by Cambridge University Press, the book has received endorsements from leading figures in the field of human rights and international law.
In the foreword, Hon. Commissioner Janet Ramatoulie Sallah-Njie, African Union Special Rapporteur on the Rights of Women in Africa and Vice-Chairperson of the African Commission on Human and Peoples' Rights, described the publication as "an indispensable resource for all human rights and women's rights enthusiasts, advocates, defenders, judges, and all who are committed to achieving gender equality on the continent. It is a powerful tool contributing to the broader vision of a gender-equitable Africa."

Justice Edward Asante, the immediate past President of the ECOWAS Court of Justice, also praised the work, saying "the author's reflections and discussions provide much-needed and welcome feedback to the Court on its approach to adjudicating the rights of women and girls."
The book provides an in-depth analysis of the ECOWAS Court's jurisprudence on women's rights, examines its landmark decisions, identifies gaps in existing case law and offers practical recommendations for strengthening the Court's approach to protecting the rights of women and girls.
Reflecting on the publication, Dr. Addadzi-Koom expressed the hope that "the book will become a source of insight, a trusted authority, and a spark for gender-transformative discussions in Africa and the world."
The publication is the first comprehensive scholarly work to examine and document the ECOWAS Court's jurisprudence on women's rights. It analyses the Court's legal milestones, critiques areas requiring further development and assesses their actual and potential impact on gender equality at both the individual and systemic levels.
